Jackfish Join the Fight for Backyard Chickens, Introduce the Niagara Lawn Cocks

WELLAND - Niagara's Greatest Show, the Welland Jackfish, announced today their newest alternate identity for the 2025 season, the Niagara Lawn Cocks.

Fighting for the little guy, or chickens in this case, the name was chosen to fight alongside our neighbours for their feathered friends.

“While I don’t own chickens personally, I can feel for the residents of the Rose City who would like to own our feather friends themselves,” said Jackfish President and Director of Fun, Ryan Harrison. “At the end of the day, with inflation the way it is, why not have a couple of hens in the backyard making grade-A Canadian eggs? Come to think of it, I kind of want a coop.”

Why the Lawn Cocks? The City of Welland along with many other Niagara communities has a bylaw restricting the ownership of chickens outside of an agricultural zone.

This alternate identity was inspired by the moniker of the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, The Bathtub Donkey’s which celebrates the law that American Blue Law stating that donkeys could not sleep in bathtubs. Created by Fooser Sports, the Niagara Lawn Cocks brings to life this identity for a limited time.

For one game only on Thursday, August 7th when the Fish take on the Brantford Red Sox, the Jackfish will transform into the Niagara Lawn Cocks, sporting new uniforms including hats and jerseys.

The Jackfish will also look to set a World Record with the most people dressed as chickens.

The Jackfish will auction the jerseys off online during the week of the game with proceeds to benefit the Niagara Children’s Centre.
